ML problem is that he cant deal with "rejection", he can't deal with his partner disappointment. He is already thinking about the brrak up just because he cant cook. So he avoids feelings and everything. Because a simple "i dont like this" is already the end for him. Of course, in part its his old experiences talking. But he truly just wants to always be useful, and when he is not, its the end of the world
